Giving Back
Since the Yale College Classes of 1877 and 1892 made the first reunion gifts in the school’s history, alumni have continued to give in honor of their reunions, contributing a significant portion of the university’s fundraising support and creating a lasting impact at Yale.
Everyone in a reunion class is encouraged to make an annual gift to the Alumni Fund. To mark a reunion year, many alumni also make a stretch commitment above and beyond their ongoing annual support.
Dedicated volunteers work with their classmates throughout the year to increase participation and elevate their class giving total.
What Counts as a Reunion Gift?
New gifts and pledges made to most areas of the university since your last reunion count toward your class reunion gift total. Alumni Fund gifts, Nathan Hale Associates scholarships, and capital gifts all count, as do gifts to Yale’s graduate or professional school annual or alumni funds. Gifts from widows or widowers and friends of your class also count toward the reunion total.
Examples of reunion gifts may include:
- A larger-than-usual annual contribution to the Alumni Fund.
- A stretch multi-year pledge to the Alumni Fund.
- An annual gift to the Alumni Fund plus a capital commitment to a restricted designation.
- A capital gift, generally with a restricted purpose (athletic team support, endowed scholarships, professorships, etc.).
- A life-income planned gift, typically a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust.
- A documented, non-contingent bequest intention.
Class dues and donations to secret societies or other groups considered independent of the university are not included in your class reunion gift total.
