Development Officer, Principal/Major Gifts, International Development

Reporting to the director of International Development, the international development officer is responsible for fundraising from a diverse portfolio of individuals and private foundations abroad, managing prospect relationships through the donor cycle from identification to stewardship. In addition to the broad gift officer responsibilities provided in the next section, the key duties of the position also include:

  1. Travels to Asia regularly, both independently and in support of senior university leaders and members of the faculty, overseeing scheduling of meetings, planning events, and developing complex itineraries.
  2. Hosts visitors on campus, arranging meetings, tours, meals, and other customized engagement for donors and prospects.
  3. Actively pursues a sophisticated understanding of the full breadth of research, programs, and student life at Yale University. Maintains awareness of key university fundraising priorities across Yale’s many schools and units and how these endeavors can make the greatest impact on the world through philanthropic giving to Yale.
  4. Collaborates with colleagues in the principal and parents giving teams to develop proposals, determine prospect strategies, and form partnerships with faculty.
  5. Develops expertise on current affairs, business, philanthropy, and culture in regions where prospects live and work.

Principal responsibilities

  1. Develops cultivation and solicitation strategies for a portfolio of prospects and donors. Builds and manages network of relationships with prospective donors involving university administrators and faculty. Facilitates and coordinates all communication with these prospects and among the prospect’s campus relationships. Promotes positive relations with these prospects and donors.
  2. Evaluates various gift opportunities and giving vehicles and recommends the most suitable for a particular donor.
  3. Interacts with internal contacts such as deans, directors, faculty, officers, and other development staff to consult on university needs, to formulate strategies to promote prospect engagement with the university and to identify potential donors.
  4. Assist with the strategy for and creation of written communications from various university administrators appropriate to a donor’s interests.
  5. Typically participates (often in concert with others) in gift solicitations to fund university programs and to enhance the development efforts of the schools and departments.
  6. May travel (possibly extensively) commensurate with Yale’s standard expectations for fundraising activity, contact and travel. May involve international travel depending upon prospect assignments.
  7. Performs additional development-related activities/efforts at the request of manager.
  8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required skills and abilities

  1. Exceptional oral and written communication skills with emphasis on writing. Ability to communicate with university leaders, faculty, administrators, and donors. Ability to present complex information in a clear and compelling manner in writing and in person. Ability to document meetings, write briefings, proposals and stewardship reports.
  2. Ability to travel extensively, especially to Asia. Demonstrated success in producing international trips for self and others, including ability to set itineraries and arrange meetings and travel logistics.
  3. Successful experience staffing senior institutional leaders, such as university presidents, vice presidents, deans and faculty. Good judgment about the extent to which cultivation can effectively be staff driven.
  4. Willingness to proactively solicit alumni, parents, and also friends (people with no previous connection to Yale).
  5. Appreciation and respect for principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Ability to engage with diverse audiences (age, gender, nationality, race/ethnicity, profession, sexual orientation, etc.).

Required education and experience

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of four years of experience in fundraising or a related field, preferably in higher education or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with sensitive information and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Preferred education and experience

Experience living, studying, or working abroad, preferably in Asia. Fluency in an Asian language is desirable, especially Mandarin. Advanced degree desirable. Experience working in a university or similarly complex organization. Familiarity with, and affinity for, Yale University.
