International Donors

A world leader in higher learning and research, Yale welcomes gifts from donors who reside or pay taxes outside the United States.
How to Give
Many alumni, parents, and friends of Yale who live outside the United States remain loyal supporters of the university. We do our best to make giving simple—and we thank you for your extraordinary generosity.
International donors using credit cards may have the option to make a gift online. To make a gift via wire transfer, please email cash.wire@yale.edu or call +1.203.432.5867. Yale University is not able to accept checks from international banks.
In some cases, it may be more tax efficient to give using one of the options below in lieu of a direct gift to Yale. Donors are also advised to review local tax laws and regulations for details and consult a local professional tax advisor.
Canada
In Canada, Yale University is currently on the list of “prescribed universities” in the Canadian Income Tax Act Schedule VII section 3503. Thus, donations to Yale are tax-deductible in Canada subject to any regulations that might otherwise apply. For information on all registered charities in Canada under the Income Tax Act, please visit the Canada Revenue Agency’s website.
Hong Kong
For donors based in Hong Kong, Yale has established the Yale Hong Kong Trust, a charitable vehicle intended to benefit the particular tax relief needs of Yale’s Hong Kong-based alumni, parents, and friends.
The Yale University Hong Kong Charitable Trust, established in 1996, is a public, tax exempt charity registered under Section 88 of the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Ordinance. As such, it may provide a tax-efficient option for Hong Kong taxpayers wishing to make a gift to Yale University.
Tax Benefits
Donations of money to the Yale University Hong Kong Charitable Trust may be deducted from a donor’s net assessable income under salaries tax, assessable profits under profits tax, and total income under personal assessment, within the limits set by the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Ordinance. Donors are strongly encouraged to contact their own tax advisors regarding the individual benefits of making gifts through Yale’s Hong Kong Charitable Trust.
Gift Acknowledgements
Donors are provided with a letter of acknowledgement from the Yale University Hong Kong Charitable Trust that will substantiate their donation for Hong Kong tax purposes. Donors should retain the acknowledgement letter as part of their tax records for at least seven years from the date of their gift.
Designation of Gifts to the Yale University Hong Kong Charitable Trust
Gifts to the Yale University Hong Kong Charitable Trust may be designated to support a particular purpose or program that advances and promotes the charitable educational work of Yale University. Donors who are considering a gift with specific restrictions for its use should contact the university to ensure that their intentions can be fulfilled.
Cash Contributions
Donors who wish to arrange a wire transfer of funds directly to the Yale University Hong Kong Charitable Trust’s bank account at BNY Mellon should contact the Office of Planned Giving for instructions.
United Kingdom
For donors based in the United Kingdom, Yale has established the UK Friends of Yale, a charitable vehicle intended to benefit the particular tax relief needs of Yale’s UK-based alumni, parents, and friends.
UK Friends of Yale University Limited is an officially registered charity in the United Kingdom. Because it is also recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization in the United States, gifts to UK Friends of Yale may be simultaneously eligible for tax benefits in both countries. Gifts to UK Friends of Yale are subject to Yale University’s gift policies.

Transnational Giving Europe
Cross-border philanthropy in Europe is now a reality. Yale supporters in a number of European countries can make tax-efficient contributions to Yale through the Transnational Giving Europe (TGE) network. TGE is a partnership of European foundations that enables donor residents of one participating country (both corporations and individuals) to contribute financial support to nonprofit organizations in other member countries.
How it Works
The first step is to make your gift to the Transnational Giving Europe (TGE) Foundation Partner in your country of residence. Giving through the foundation provides you with all the fiscal advantages, including a tax receipt. Your gift will then be transferred to your intended foreign beneficiary; for Yale, it is the UK Friends of Yale. Once the gift has been transferred to the UK Friends of Yale, it will be applied towards its designated purpose at Yale. Please be advised that it can take upwards of several weeks for the transfer of your gift to Yale to be completed.
Select partners include:
- Spain: Fundación Empresa y Sociedad
- Germany: Maecenata International e. v.
- Greece: HIGGS
- Italy: Fondazione Donor Italia
- Switzerland: Swiss Philanthropy Foundation
Work with Your Financial Advisor
It is highly recommended that European resident donors work directly with their financial advisor and their country’s foundation partner in order to make their gift to Yale. If you have further questions regarding making gifts through the TGE network, please contact Eileen Flood at the UK Friends of Yale.
