Endowed & Directed Giving

Yale takes on work that only a few institutions can do. This work is possible because we maintain the tangible assets, human capital, and culture of excellence needed to undertake it.

The most generous gifts to Yale can be directed to tackle big questions—or to build the institution itself.

Giving for Lasting Change

Moving the needle on really big questions is never easy. It requires the partnership of exceptional people, strength across disciplines, and long-term resources needed to stay the course, for years or even decades.

At Yale, you will find tremendously capable people dedicated to issues you care about. We offer many opportunities for you to not only support their efforts but also expand the capacity of the institution to effect lasting change. These are the gifts that grow our foundations for discovery, teaching, and innovation in service of society. For the donor, they create a distinguished and lasting legacy.

A Path That’s Right for You

A directed gift is an expendable gift to Yale intended for a specific, “restricted” purpose. You may choose, for example, to fund a “bricks and mortar” project that expands and restores the campus, or you may support an academic program. A directed gift serves as a timely resource to help Yale achieve a targeted goal.

An endowed gift establishes a permanent fund within Yale’s endowment. Such a gift may support, for example, a named scholarship, professorship, or dean’s resource fund. The endowed fund is intended to support the work of the university in perpetuity by releasing an annual flow of funds to Yale’s operations. Careful management means that spending is predictable and sustainable, so that the purchasing power of the endowment is preserved for future generations.

Support a Cause that Matters

The resources needed to sustain Yale are not marshalled overnight. They are carefully assembled, cultivated, and safeguarded from one generation to the next.

Whether you advocate for progress in a specific field, hope to solve an intractable problem, or simply believe in the enduring value of higher education, you can find people at Yale working for change you care about.

If you wish to make an endowed or directed gift to Yale, we can connect you to a gift officer who can discuss your interests, introduce you to our faculty, and develop an approach to giving that meets your needs.

Give to support lasting change.
