Development Associate, Assistant Science Writer, Corporate and Foundation Relations

Reporting to the operations and stewardship manager within the Office of Development’s Corporate & Foundation Relations and Science and Engineering team, the assistant science writer will provide comprehensive writing and writing assistance for all stages of prospect management and proposal development. The primary responsibilities of the position include: assisting frontline fundraisers with all aspects of writing, editing, research and project management, with a special focus on topical areas in the life and physical sciences. Materials the writer will edit and/or draft include cultivation and stewardship correspondence for frontline fundraisers, faculty, and university administrators, technical scientific proposals, high-level concept/white papers, faculty bios and profiles, and other documents as assigned. Additional responsibilities include: working with Yale administration and faculty as needed, and in conjunction with frontline fundraisers, to secure relevant information for written materials and assist in setting strategy to position and steward cases; conducting pertinent research as needed on past giving, current funding priorities, and other aspects of institutional relationships with donors to produce final documents (letters, proposals, etc.).

Principal responsibilities

  1. Prepares a wide variety of written materials including grant and gift proposals, briefings, cultivation and stewardship correspondence, and research summaries with significant scientific content for both internal and external development constituents.
  2. Researches and compiles lists of prospects in the sciences and related fields for a variety of purposes, ensuring that all prospect information is accurate and up-to-date.
  3. Designs, develops, and produces ad hoc reports and analyses of science prospects by report generation and manipulation of information systems, including the university’s primary constituent database.
  4. Develops strategy and methodology for identifying leading prospects with interests in the sciences and related fields.
  5. Conducts research on individuals using office data and internet search engines, often partnering with Office of Development research associates.
  6. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required skills and abilities

  1. Demonstrated, superior written communications skills including the ability to write effectively and in a timely manner. Ability to write and convey content with proficiency. Strong editing and research skills.
  2. Demonstrated organizational abilities with strong attention to detail.
  3. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and the ability to conduct data analysis. Knowledge of PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.
  4. Ability to prioritize work, multi-task, and meet deadlines in a team-centered, time-constrained environment.
  5. Professionalism, maturity, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Required education and experience

Bachelor’s degree in the sciences, engineering, or a related field and two years of experience in scientific research and/or in project management involving professional scientific writing or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Preferred education, experience, and skills

Advanced degree. Experience in a university setting or with development work. Familiarity with Yale. Familiarity with Blackbaud database systems and/or other database software and reporting.
