When Carlos Eire arrived in the United States from Cuba in 1962, a child without his parents, the only possession he carried was The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis, a fifteenth-century devotional manual. Some five decades later, as the T. Lawrason Riggs Professor of History & Religious Studies, Eire exposes Yale students to the complex social, intellectual, religious, and cultural history of late medieval and early modern Europe. Students in Eire’s courses delve into the past to find lessons about the present.
