Director for Corporate Relations & Strategic Partnerships

Reporting jointly to the associate vice president for development (university director for corporate and foundation relations) and to the vice provost for research and working in close coordination with Yale leadership and faculty. The director for corporate relations and strategic partnerships is charged with helping to identify Yale as a leading institution for corporate collaborations and alliances. Responsible for building, sustaining, and expanding mutually beneficial relationships between industry and Yale. The director will also work to identify key areas of opportunity and engagement for companies to work with Yale across the university. The director will help secure corporate support in the form of corporate sponsored research and corporate philanthropic giving. The director will also assist in developing communication strategies that promote corporate relations and will actively collaborate with schools and units across Yale as needed.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Work with Yale leadership, faculty, and staff as well as senior corporate executives to communicate and engage with industry around fundraising priorities and academic initiatives as well as those areas of greatest intersection with industry.

  2. Articulate the mission, academic strengths, and funding priorities to industry partners to support institutional partnership with Yale; work to articulate the specific purpose and level of partnership and effectively make the case for support of Yale to industry.

  3. Assist in the development and implementation of cultivation strategies and methods for corporate prospects including providing effective coordination of activities such as campus visits, site visits, and travel to relevant sites.

  4. Work with other offices at Yale, especially those that interact with companies such as the Office of Cooperative Research, and those offices, such as Office of Research Administration, Office of General Counsel, and Office of Marketing & Trademark Licensing, relevant to executing agreements with companies. 

  5. Collaborate with colleagues in development and those in Yale’s various schools, to identify, engage, and steward corporate prospects and donors. 

  6. Work with colleagues in prospect research to build prospecting procedures and identify potential corporate prospects and donors.

  7. Coordinate and assist with the implementation of faculty training toward maximizing engagement of corporate donors and prospects.

  8. Ensure effective and efficient use of administrator and faculty time as related to development activities.

  9. Evaluate and advise on existing stewardship program for support in corporate relationships.

  10. Manage a small pool of donors and prospects.

  11. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and seven years of experience in academic and industry settings, or other relationship-building areas in complex organizations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  1. Deep understanding of research in academic and industry settings. Well-developed written and oral communication skills.

  2. Ability to work independently. A self-starter with a high level of integrity and the ability to exercise confidentiality and discretion. Must be professional in all aspects.

  3. Ability to work regularly and effectively with Yale academic and administrative leadership and faculty, other senior members of the units.

  4. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to donors, volunteers, and colleagues as well as University leadership and students. Professionalism, maturity, good judgment, and an ability to work well in a team environment.

  5. Knowledge of university organization and academic and administrative policies and procedures. Knowledge of industry research. Knowledge and proficiency in fundraising strategies and techniques.
